Unifor members from across British Columbia’s Lower Mainland joined a B.C. Government Employees’ Union (BCGEU) picket line on Friday, June 1 to host a solidarity barbeque.
“When working people are fighting for their rights on a picket line, Unifor will be there,” said Jerry Dias, National President.
More than 400 BCGEU members at Coquitlam’s Hard Rock Casino working as slot attendants and cashiers; and in in table games, the count room, kitchen, security, theatre, and guest services have been on strike since May 11. The casino workers have been without a first contract for more than two years.
Unifor members from locals 111, 114, 433, 2000, 2002, 2200, 3000, and Unifor’s container truckers helped cook the striker’s lunch and bolster the picket lines as casino patrons attempted to cross picket lines to gamble inside.
Unifor B.C. Area Director Gavin McGarrigle was at the barbeque and was impressed with the resolve of the strikers.
“After talking with BCGEU members on the picket line, I’m confident that they have the stamina to win,” he said. “Unifor is committed to standing up for casino workers in B.C. and across the country.”
