Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle joined hundreds of people in White Rock, B.C. on Sept. 30 for Semiahmoo First Nation's 6th Annual Walk for Truth and Reconciliation.

"Reconciliation is not one day on the calendar. It's a commitment we carry into our workplaces, our communities and our union every day," said McGarrigle. "We walked to honour Survivors, to remember the children who never came home, and to listen. Unifor members are proud to stand with Semiahmoo First Nation in that work."

Led by Semiahmoo First Nation Chief Harley Chappell, the walk began at Grand Chief Bernard Robert Charles Memorial Plaza on White Rock's East Beach and continued to Semiahmoo Park.

At the park, participants were welcomed by Semiahmoo First Nation and heard from guest speaker Phyllis Webstad, a residential school Survivor and founder of the Orange Shirt Day movement. The afternoon also included performances by the Kwel Eng Sen Youth Dancers and JB The First Lady, an Indigenous artisan market, and a community lunch provided by the Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association.

McGarrigle was joined by several Unifor Member Organizers, who have begun connecting with members across B.C. ahead of the Oct. 24 provincial election to talk about the issues that matter to workers and encourage everyone to vote.
