BURNABY—The employer’s lack of support for fair wages, benefit improvements, and scheduling has led members of Unifor Local 3000 at the Holiday Inn Express at Vancouver-Metrotown to vote in favour of a strike this summer if an agreement cannot be reached.
“Unifor members are proud to serve guests at this popular hotel, but our patience is not endless,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “The cost of living in Metro Vancouver is rising, and so should compensation for the workers that make this hotel so successful.”
The union will meet again with the employer in June, and no strike deadline has been set.
“A disruption in services can be avoided with a fair contract that recognizes the contribution of our members,” said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle.
Unifor Local 3000 represents 30 unionized staff working in housekeeping, the front desk, maintenance, and banquet events.
Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
