Unifor members of Local 4304 at Grand River Transit (GRT) have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action, with 93% supporting the mandate as negotiations continue ahead of the collective agreement expiry on April 30, 2026.

“This strong strike mandate sends a clear message to the employer that our members are united and prepared to take action to achieve a fair agreement,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Transit workers keep communities moving every day, and they deserve fair wages, reliable scheduling, and benefits that reflect the essential services they provide.”

The vote reflects the priorities of GRT workers, who are focused on achieving improvements to wages, scheduling, and benefits in the current round of bargaining.

“Our members have spoken loud and clear—they are ready to stand up for the respect and fairness they deserve,” said Unifor Local 4304 President Heath Abbott. “We are committed to reaching a fair agreement, but the employer needs to come to the table prepared to address the key issues facing our members.”

Negotiations began on February 9, 2026, and will continue in Kitchener on April 15–16 and April 27–30. While conciliation has concluded, the parties remain engaged in talks. In the absence of an agreement, workers will be in a legal strike deadline as of 12:01 a.m. on May 1, 2026.

Unifor Local 4304 represents approximately 850 workers at Grand River Transit, including operators, maintenance technicians, service attendants, and reservationists.
