Unifor a force for change: Dias

For its first two years, Unifor has been a force for change in this country, working to make Canada a better place for all, National President Jerry Dias said in his opening address to Canadian Council in Montreal this morning.

“Because of our union, labour has changed.  Politics has changed, and we have changed,” Dias said. “But change is not something you turn on and off.  It is a process and a continuum. We are piece by piece building a new union.”

Dias reviewed the many victories Unifor has had in its first two years, as well as its ongoing and groundbreaking work in many current struggles.

“But all of our hard work can be diminished if we don’t change the politics of the country.”

The Harper government has been bad for Canada and bad for the working people of this country, and must be defeated on October 19, Dias said.

“The hopes and aspirations of our members hang in the balance of the federal election campaign that is now upon us.”

In his address welcoming delegates to Montreal, FTQ President Daniel Boyer echoed Dias’s call to defeat Harper.

“In the last election, we elected 59 NDP MPs in Quebec. This time, we are looking for more.”
