OTTAWA, Aug. 24, 2016 /CNW/ - Leadership of the country's largest private sector union was confirmed yesterday in Ottawa. Unifor is celebrating its second Constitutional Convention at the Shaw Centre with more than 1,800 delegates in attendance.

Current leaders stood for re-election, with the exception of Peter Kennedy, who is retiring, and Katha Fortier who was named Assistant to the President.

Jerry Dias now enters his second 3-year term as President of Unifor after he ran unchallenged.

"I thought I was energized three years ago, but I'm more energized today than I was when we founded Unifor," said Dias. "We will continue to fight until we have achieved social and economic justice, not just for our members but for all workers."

Replacing Peter Kennedy is long-time leader and activist Bob Orr who was elected as Unifor's Secretary-Treasurer.

Lana Payne and Joie Warnock will return as Atlantic and Western Regional Directors, respectively. The Regional Directors were joined by Naureen Rizvi, former Toronto Area Director and Director of Telecommunications, who was elected Ontario Regional Director.

Renaud Gagné was elected at Quebec Regional Council and was acclaimed by the membership as one of the top three officers of Unifor.
