Unifor’s Canadian Community Fund has donated commercial-grade refrigerators to the Bear Clan Patrol’s food security program in Winnipeg’s North End.
The refrigerators have greatly improved the group’s ability to distribute perishable foods. With the new units installed, local grocery chains including Sobey’s, Costco, and not-for-profit food bank Winnipeg Harvest can now deliver larger volumes of donated food.
“Unifor is giving back to communities across Canada,” said Gavin McGarrigle, Western Regional Director. “We’re proud to partner again with Bear Clan Patrol to help them do what they do best—serve their community.”
Unifor Indigenous Liaison Gina Smoke worked with Bear Clan Executive Director James Favel to coordinate the project and maximize Unifor’s impact.
Winnipeg’s North End is one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Canada, with a large homeless and Indigenous population. Calls by Indigenous communities to deliver a much-needed service in a culturally safe way help drive the Fund’s donation.
