During the month of December, Unifor Locals delivered donations to support food banks and women’s shelters across the country.
Leading up to December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, local unions distributed a total of $146,000 to 73 women’s shelters nationwide.
“These donations help to fund crisis services to women and children forced to flee domestic abuse and to help them rebuild a new life free of violence,” said National President Jerry Dias.
A total of $135,000, donated jointly by the Unifor Social Justice Fund, Unifor National and Unifor Regional Councils, was also provided to 48 food banks to aid children and adults facing food insecurity in communities across Canada.
“With people struggling to get by due to underemployment, stagnant wages and the rising cost of living, many turn to local food banks for extra support,” said Dias.
According to Campaign 2000’s 2018 National Report Card, one in six children in Canada are food insecure. The report also shows that poverty disproportionately discriminates against children in families that are lone female-led, racialized, newcomers, Indigenous or affected by disabilities.
Unifor responds annually to the crisis facing thousands of Canadian families to help eradicate hunger and ensure that everyone has enough to eat this holiday season.
