Unifor is proud to partner with the Canadian Red Cross to support the people of Fort McMurray and its surrounding communities as they respond to the devastation caused by raging forest fires.
Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the Oilsands, representing more than 4,000 workers. Today, Unifor National President Jerry Dias joined Conrad Sauvé, President and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross, to announce that Unifor is contributing $500,000 to Fort McMurray disaster relief.
“Our members in Fort McMurray fled the fire zone with their families and little else. Hundreds of them have lost their houses to the flames and thousands of them remain without access to their homes,” said Dias. “Our local unions have been working hard on the ground to provide food, shelter and support to our members. This donation to the Red Cross will aid the entire Fort McMurray community as they cope with the evacuation and face the daunting task of rebuilding."
Here in Canada and overseas, the Red Cross stands ready to help people before, during and after a disaster. The Canadian Red Cross is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and throughout the world.
“Canada’s response to this emergency has been swift and generous with Canadians from Coast to Coast coming together to show their care and compassion for the people of Ford McMurray,” said Sauvé. “I thank Unifor and their members for joining this incredible outpouring of support.”
"As a union we understand the responsibility we have to the communities our members live in," said Dias. "The community of Fort McMurray is burnt but its spirit is not disenfranchised."
