Unifor delivers gains for casino workers

Vancouver—On the heels of unionizing workers at Casino Rama in Ontario last month, Unifor members at Edgewater Casino in downtown Vancouver (Local 3000) have ratified a new collective agreement with solid economic gains for members.

“Unifor is the union for casino workers,” said Ellen-Marie Moreira, Vice President for local 3000, representing Unifor’s Edgewater Casino workers. “Our new contract achieves greater economic security and stronger workplace democracy.”

The new Local 3000 collective agreement is a three-year deal with a two per cent wage increase in each year. The deal introduces a night shift premium, and a greater say for workers in the customer service policy.

“Negotiations are never easy, but I’m very proud of Local 3000 and their skill at winning gains for members,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor’s Western Director.

Local 3000 represents over 500 members at Edgewater Casino and almost 9,000 in the gaming sector across Canada. Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing more than 305,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
