FREDERICTON – Unifor is calling on all New Brunswick MLAs to support today’s Throne Speech.

The results of the provincial election dictate that collaboration and consensus-building are expected by New Brunswickers, and this Throne Speech is evidence the Liberals were listening.

The Speech contains a number of initiatives that can and should be supported by most if not all the political parties.

“I believe it strikes a balance and deserves the support of the Legislature,” said Lana Payne Unifor Atlantic Regional Director. Unifor is New Brunswick’s largest private-sector union with over 7,300 members in key economic sectors such as forestry, telecom, transportation, manufacturing and hospitality.

The Throne Speech also included a number of important advances for workers, for young people and women’s equality.

“To vote against these measures tells workers that political parties are putting politics over rolling up their sleeves and working for a better New Brunswick,” said Payne.

Ian Hutchison, Unifor Atlantic Regional Chair and president of Unifor Local 601N (Irving Paper) in Saint John, said this is an opportunity for MLAs to prove to New Brunswickers that they can work together.

“MLAs should consider the message they will send if they vote against things like a pay increase for women - pay equity - and for the province’s lowest-wage workers,”said Hutchison.
