Unifor leadership, members and their families gathered at Africville Park in Halifax on August 9 for the Atlantic Regional Council’s BIWOC Committee’s annual barbecue.
“It’s important that our union creates spaces where every member feels welcomed, valued and able to be themselves,” said Unifor Atlantic Regional Director Jennifer Murray. “The BIWOC Committee does incredible work to make sure everyone has a strong voice in our union, while creating opportunities for all members to come together, build relationships and learn from one another.”
Held at the historic site of Africville, the event brought members together for an afternoon of food, fun and community. Families enjoyed a barbecue lunch alongside games, prizes, face painting and a bouncy castle.
The annual event is an opportunity for the BIWOC Committee to build connections among members and create a welcoming, inclusive space for all Unifor members and their families.
Unifor Director of Equity and Racial Justice Tricia Wilson and Director of Indigenous Relations Gina Smoke also attended the barbecue, joining members and families for the afternoon.
BIWOC Committee Chair Lorna Bowden said the barbecue is about more than just enjoying a summer afternoon.
“This is a chance for our members and their families to connect, have fun and create relationships with one another,” said Bowden. “We’re proud to host this event each year and grateful to everyone who came out to celebrate with us.”
Unifor thanks the Atlantic BIWOC committee and all of the members and families who attended and helped make the barbecue a success.
