Unifor will take the concerns of workers to three government taskforces aimed at safeguarding Canadian jobs: the Manitoba U.S. Trade Council, the B.C. Trade and Economic Security Taskforce, and the B.C. Softwood Lumber Advisory Council.

“Governments must hear directly from workers when making decisions that affect trade and economic security,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Unifor will use these platforms to push for policies that protect jobs, support economic growth, and strengthen Canada’s economy in the face of growing uncertainty.”

Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle will represent Unifor on the panels. Each group brings together labour, business, and other leaders to advise the government on strategies to protect jobs and industries from the destabilizing effects of tariffs.

“Unifor is committed to ensuring that trade policies serve the interests of working people,” said McGarrigle. “Canadian workers and industries are much more resilient than Trump realizes.”

Approximately 54% of B.C.’s exports and nearly 77% of Manitoba’s exports are sent to the United States, accounting for 12% and 44% of each province’s GDP, respectively.

Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
