Unifor applauds formation of Just Transition task force

Unifor welcomes a new initiative of the federal government that will focus on workers displaced by Canada’s ongoing coal-fired electricity phase-out. Union representatives will form a majority of a task force, joined by an elected municipal official and two experts in the area.

“There is no green economy without Just Transition,” said Jerry Dias, National President. “Leaving workers behind is simply not an option. We’re going to fight for workers’ rights in every sector of the economy and that includes an equitable transition.”

The Task Force on Just Transition for Canadian Coal Power Workers and Communities will be responsible for researching options and making recommendations about Just Transition to the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change.

Over the next nine months, the Task Force will be meeting with a variety of stakeholders, from community leaders to finance investment organizations. It will also conduct site visits to see first-hand the communities to be affected by the coal phase out.
