Unifor to announce Detroit Three target company

Unifor will announce the target company for its current round of negotiations with the Detroit Three automakers on Tuesday, September 6, in the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel.

"Unifor has made investment in Canada the top priority of these negotiations, and it is our intent to establish a pattern agreement that will set a standard for all three automakers," said Unifor National President Jerry Dias.

The media conference will release specifics on which of the Detroit Three automakers – Fiat Chrysler, Ford or General Motors – will set the bargaining pattern for the auto industry in Canada.

With pattern bargaining, negotiations focus on one company, establishing a pattern that will model the contracts of with the other automakers. Once a deal is ratified with the pattern target, focus shifts to the next company, and then the third.

Unifor's contract with the Detroit Three expires midnight on Monday, September 19. Members of Unifor have already voted overwhelmingly to give the bargaining committees authorization to call a strike, if needed. The union however hopes to reach a fair agreement in advance of the deadline to address the needs of workers and secure a future for the industry. “These negotiations are about the future economic well being of the entire country,” said Dias.
