PRINCE RUPERT—Unifor congratulates United Fishermen and Allied Workers’ Union (UFAWU-Unifor) president Joy Thorkelson on her appointment to the newly-created Wild Salmon Advisory Council.

“Joy is very experienced in the fish harvesting sector and will be a key resource in the effort to keep wild salmon stocks healthy,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Regional Director.

First announced on June 15, the Council’s 14 members will advise the Wild Salmon Secretariat on a wide range of public policy issues as well as providing guidance to government. The Council consists of various experts from the industry, First Nations and B.C. coastal communities.

“Wild salmon is critical to the way of life for thousands of British Columbians,” said Thorkelson. “It is important for the government to be proactive to protect wild salmon and its habitat and to ensure the benefits from fisheries are delivered to fishing communities.”
