FREDERICTON, March 12, 2015 /CNW/ - Members of the University of New Brunswick Employees Association (UNBEA) voted Wednesday to become members of Unifor in a near-unanimous decision.
"We're thrilled with the result of the vote," said Augustine Brideau, UNBEA president. "With the next round of bargaining coming up, we all felt that we'd be in a much better position to defend the interests of our membership with the strength of Unifor behind us."
Staff from the union met with an auditorium of UNBEA members on Wednesday to outline details of the supports, services and expertise that Unifor offers its members. Following the successful vote, the union will now file a successor union application at the New Brunswick Labour Board before launching into bargaining on behalf of the 333 ground maintenance, trades and clerical staff at the university.
"Unifor is a bold and progressive social union. We can offer strength and support at the bargaining table and just as importantly we are committed to making positive change in our communities and in our world," said Lana Payne, Unifor Atlantic Regional Director. "We're so very, very pleased that these university workers have chosen to join Unifor and I know they will be a great addition to the dynamic and diverse team of activists and members in the region."
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 305,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
