OTTAWA, Nov. 17, 2014 /CNW/ - Negotiations between Unifor and the RA Centre have broken down as of last night, after RA tabled a final offer that failed to meet even the most common of contract provisions.
The RA Centre won't even agree to basic provisions around job security, work hours and lay-off protection, said Mike Armstrong, Unifor National Representative.
"Our members really want to secure their employment and a new collective agreement before the holidays," said Armstrong. "Their concerns are not being taken seriously at the bargaining table though and we're now at an impasse."
Armstrong said that the union will now be ramping up efforts to pressure RA to settle. Unifor Local 4270 represents the 55 unionized staff members at the RA Centre, who have been without a collective agreement since May. The union is now in a legal strike position.
No new bargaining dates have been scheduled.
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 305,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
