It is with profound sadness that Unifor acknowledges the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair.

In his role as Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Sinclair's leadership was instrumental in bringing to light the horrors of the residential school system, amplifying the voices of survivors, and forging a path toward healing and reconciliation.

Long before the TRC, Sinclair’s accomplishments blazed a trail in Manitoba and Canada’s legal system and he was a respected role-model in Indigenous communities from coast-to-coast. His work inspired trade unionists everywhere and Unifor will miss his leadership and wisdom. Sinclair was a guest at several Unifor events in the last decade and received the union’s Nelson Mandela Award for Human Rights in 2016.

Sinclair's legacy, reflected in the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action, is a clear and tangible path to truth and reconciliation. Unifor honours Murray Sinclair’s life and legacy, and recommits to the ongoing work of social justice.
