Statement from Jerry Dias on Thunder Bay murder

Share

The devastating news that a Thunder Bay mother has been assaulted by her partner and the woman’s daughter killed shows how important it is that all of us confront head-on the issue of gender-based violence in Canada. I am both saddened and outraged by this brutal attack.

While the vast majority of victims of such attacks are women, this is not a women’s issue alone. This is a societal issue, and one that men bear a particular responsibility to address.

News of the assault and murder shook Unifor’s founding women’s conference, currently being held in Port Elgin. Several delegates to the conference represent Unifor members in the Thunder Bay area, including Bombardier and health care workers.

My condolences go out to this grieving mother and her son, and pledge to her that Unifor will do all we can to both help them through this, and to prevent such horrific acts in the future.

Unifor calls on all levels of government to support a national action plan to end gender-based violence. And, I further call on all men to not only condemn this attack, but to commit to fighting violence against women generally.
