KINCARDINE– Sobeys grocery store workers in Kincardine, Ontario have voted to ratify a new collective agreement that achieves gains, including wage increases, schedule improvements, and benefit gains.
"Unifor continues to make strides in raising working conditions in retail work across the country, which is more important than ever during the COVID-19 era,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias. “There is still much work to be done to address low wages and precarious work in this sector and this remains a priority for our union.”
The new three-year tentative agreement between of Unifor Local 414 and Sobeys covers 138 members at the Kincardine store and was adopted with 88 per cent support. It builds on the first contract obtained when the workers joined Unifor in 2017.
The new collective agreement includes yearly wage improvements for full and part-time workers of $0.30, $0.30, $0.40, plus increases to night shift premiums, drug and vision care benefits extended to part time workers and many other gains.
“These frontline workers deserve respect and the bargaining committee has worked to gain ground and deliver substantive improvements in this new agreement,” said Gord Currie, President of Unifor Local 414.
The new collective agreement will expire on August 2, 2023.
