Unifor welcomes 157 new members at the Shoreline Casino in Belleville, Ontario, after they voted last week to join the union.

“These are difficult times in the gaming industry and these workers recognize that they need a voice in the workplace,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias.

“Unifor is the number one union in the gaming sector because we understand the industry and the needs of workers in that sector.”

The new members include Food & Beverage workers, Kitchen workers, Dealers, Slot attendants and Technicians, Guest Services and Housekeeping.

The vote was held electronically over a 24-hour period March 17-18, rather than the standard in-person paper balloting, due to the spread of COVID-19. The Ontario Labour Relations Board has said that more votes will be held electronically in the future.

“This is perhaps the new reality in organizing, and Unifor’s Organizing Department is adapting quickly to do more online,” said Unifor Organizing Director Kellie Scanlan.
