Shooting in Orlando Florida reminds us all of the danger of hate

Unifor stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ community of Orlando, Florida.  In the early morning of June 12 a lone gunman entered a packed gay nightclub with an assault rifle and began shooting.  50 people were killed and at least 53 others were shot and injured.

This horrific act of violence was premeditated and fuelled by hate. It is a stark reminder of the danger of homophobia and transphobia and the violence that members of the LGBTQ community face every day. In the wake of this event, we must renew our efforts to put an end to hate-based violence and continue to push for stronger gun control legislation.

The timing of this shooting is darkly symbolic, as communities across the country and around the world prepare for pride celebrations. This year when we march in Pride parades, our thoughts will be with the friends and families of those injured or killed in Orlando. We will march for the members of the LGBTQ community we have lost to hate-based violence. We will march not only to celebrate love and equality, but in defiance of hate.

Our solidarity with the LGBTQ community at home and internationally makes us stronger. We must continue to fight for equality in our workplaces, our communities and around the world.
