Montreal – Unifor Quebec acknowledges the announcement that François Legault is stepping down as Premier of Quebec. While this decision marks the end of a political cycle in the province, it is essential that it open the door to a profound re-examination of the policies that have undermined workers, public services and social dialogue in Quebec.

In recent years, the Legault government has shown a propensity for making choices that have too often ignored the voices of workers. At a time when our members in Quebec’s leading manufacturing industries are facing an unprecedented crisis along with repeated blows from the Trump administration, this premier has chosen to attack their union rather than work together to protect them.

“François Legault’s departure must signal the beginning of a shift in tone. Quebec workers need a government that respects social dialogue and union rights, and that puts public services and the economy at the service of the people, not the other way around,” declared Unifor Quebec Director Daniel Cloutier.

Unifor Quebec points out that the challenges facing the province are enormous: the rise in the cost of living, labour shortages, environmental transition, the future of the regions, protection of industrial jobs and respect for the fundamental rights of workers are just some of the issues that demand urgent action. The next government must break with past policies based on confrontation and austerity and commit to a more unifying approach.

Unifor Quebec intends to remain fully mobilized to ensure that the voices of its members are heard as we enter the next political cycle and that future decisions are made in the interests of all Quebec citizens.
