In the aftermath of the US election, many of us have been thinking and talking about the outcome and what difficulties lay ahead. Although the results may have been a devastating surprise, the voters have spoken. I believe that this outcome is a reflection of a deep mistrust in politics and of politicians. It is also a stark reminder that sexism and racism continue to have a powerful influence in our lives and fuel hate.
We cannot allow this hatred to go unchecked and set us backwards.
Let this election be an important reminder of the need for our progressive voices and mobilizations to continue. Unity is our strength. Now is the time to be re-energized, get active and to be more engaged for a socially just world.
During the election campaign, President-elect Trump made his politics clear. This agenda will be both an attack on civil and human rights along with an attack on labour unions and our international labour movement. He made election promises with respect to trade deal, including a renegotiation of NAFTA. All of this we will watch closely, monitor and we will continue to lobby governments and mobilize to defend good jobs, fair trade and to ensure that workers’ rights are protected.
Unifor supports cross-border trade and initiatives that aim to boost trade in a fair and productive way. Trade must not undermine our democratic institutions, erode job quality and grant extraordinary rights to private investors and private corporations. People must be put before profit.
Our primary concern remains focused on being an activist union and building a strong, united movement.
We must continue to be agents of social change to defend workers’ rights and human rights, good unionized jobs and to build a thriving economy. To do this, we need you, our members, to stay active and involved. The future is worth fighting for.
