Unifor files for conciliation in VIA Rail negotiations

Unifor Council 4000 and Local 100 filed for conciliation on March 25, 2025, and the Labour Minister now has up to 15-days to appoint a federal conciliator to assist the parties with contract negotiations. This step comes after several rounds of bargaining where key proposals from the Union remain unresolved.”

While we await the appointment of a conciliator, bargaining is continuing this week, with our next session scheduled for April 14, 2025. The employer still has numerous proposals on the table, many of which Unifor believes would negatively affect members’ working conditions.

Our committees are focused on negotiating improvements and protections that reflect the essential contributions of VIA Rail workers.

As we stated before, the future of VIA Rail is uncertain as we still don’t have clarity on how Alto will affect the corridor. Regardless of what happens we are working hard to strengthen job security and to strengthen the collective agreement provisions to protect our members from harm.

Council 4000 represents members working in station services, headquarters, maintenance centres, and onboard trains. Local 100 represents Diesel Engine Mechanics, Electricians, Railcar Technicians, and General Workers.

We will continue to keep members informed. The employer’s updates may not always reflect the full picture, so rely on union channels for accurate information.
