Delegates to Unifor’s recent Quebec Council took part in a massive protest in the streets of Quebec City against the provincial Liberal government’s austerity measures.

Combined with a protest in Montreal, the rallies drew thousands into the streets on November 29.

Quebec Director Michel Ouimet, urged members to take an active part in fighting the policies of the Couillard government. His appeal was unanimously approved by the local unions present.

In speaking of the union’s main activities over the past few months, Ouimet reminded members that “the creation of Unifor is one of the greatest achievements by a union in this country.” He also said that “we can look to the future with confidence, because together we will be able to meet the many challenges ahead, including that of defeating the Harper government in the 2015 federal elections.”

Unifor National President Jerry Dias also called on members to make a firm commitment to defeating the Harper government, offering an original presentation of the Top 10 reasons Harper must be defeated.

Local 2002’s Benoît Lapointe was elected chair of the Quebec Council by acclamation. The position had been left vacant with the hiring of Marcel Rondeau as national representative.
