Quebec Council debates international trade deals and the 2018 Quebec elections

Over 400 Unifor delegates gathered at the Sheraton Centre in Montreal from November 24-26, to discuss a range of issues. They took the opportunity to march through the downtown streets to remind people that thousands of jobs in every region of Quebec and Canada are at stake in the negotiation of international agreements.

“The Canadian government has to remain firm when negotiating not only NAFTA, but also other trade deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Labour and environmental standards and social rights should not be sacrificed to serve purely financial interests,” insisted Quebec Director Renaud Gagné.

In workshops, delegates were also invited to contribute to the reflection aimed at laying the groundwork for Unifor’s electoral strategy. The union’s 2018 election platform will be partly based on the recommendations put forward. The Political Action Committee will then be tasked with organizing teams of activists across Quebec who will be responsible for spreading the union’s demands.

“In order to effectively influence future politicians on the issues that are important to us, we have to make ourselves known and explain our demands,” said Gagné. “We will need all our members to do that.”
