Unifor welcomes 53 new members from Porter Airlines at Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) to the union.
“Congratulations to our new members at Porter Airlines, we are thrilled to have you join more than 13,000aviation workers who are part of Unifor,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne.
“You’re joining a robust sector full of members who are fighting to improve working conditions throughout the industry, and we look forward to bargaining your first collective agreement.”
These members work above the wing and provide mostly customer service-related duties such as: selling tickets, providing information about flights, providing wheelchair assistance, and assisting with baggage. Some work as leads, and the certification also includes station supervisors.
The workers decided to join Unifor to improve wages, treatment and respect in their workplace and to fight for more full-time agents, as over 70% of the workforce are part-timers.
Organizing for this campaign began on July 14, 2023, and Unifor received Canada Industrial Relations Board certification on Oct. 22, 2024.
Unifor also represents members at Porter Airlines Fixed Base Operations Ltd. in Toronto and Porter customer service agents at Ottawa airport.
“After a long wait at the labour board, we’re happy to welcome Porter YHZ workers to Unifor,” said Unifor Organizing Director Justin Gniposky.
“With union membership, they finally have the collective voice needed to secure the collective agreement they deserve—joining their colleagues at YOW and YTZ in raising the standard for Porter workers across Canada.”
