After pressuring the employer with an eight-day strike, Unifor Local 1090 members ratified a new four-year agreement with Great Canadian Gaming Corporation at Pickering Casino Resort and Casino Ajax.

“Workers took a stand, and as a direct result we reduced the wage disparity between casino properties,” said Corey Dalton, Unifor Local 1090 president.

The new contract features significant wage increases of up to 25% for some classifications. Reducing the employer’s reliance on precarious part-time jobs, a key demand from the beginning of negotiations, will result in at least 120 new full-time positions.

“Casino jobs must be good jobs,” said Dalton. “This contract is an important step towards ensuring workers at Pickering and Ajax casinos can make ends meet without the fear of what inflation could do to their paycheques.”

Local 1090 members will also see improvements to: benefits, layoff and recall provisions, paid time off, bereavement time, scheduling, and vacation.
