Pharmacare consultation deadline tomorrow

The deadline to provide input on making prescription medications more affordable for all Canadians is approaching as the federal government’s online consultation on pharmacare closes tomorrow, September 28, 2018.

As many as 8.4 million Canadians have no prescription drug coverage at all, disproportionately affecting women and young workers. Canadians face a bewildering patchwork of public and private prescription drug coverage programs and plans. The spotty prescription coverage system is inefficient and expensive, with Canadians paying wildly different rates and receiving inconsistent coverage.

Despite public and private drug programs, 1 in 5 Canadians are still unable to afford their medication.

Unifor has joined with an ever-growing list of organizations to endorse The Canadian Federation of Nurses Union Pharmacare Consensus Principles. These principles outline the elements of a successful and effective national prescription drug program: it must be a single-payer system that is universal, public, accessible, comprehensive in coverage, and portable.

A universal pharmacare plan for Canada would improve access and affordability for everyone.
