Unifor will hold its first regional council from December 6 to 8 when the Ontario Council meets to establish its bylaws and elect an executive and committee members.
“This will be truly a historic occasion,” said Unifor Ontario Regional Director Katha Fortier. “It’s the first meeting of any of the new regional councils established under Unifor.”
The 750 delegates, plus Unifor staff, will arrive to a packed agenda. As the first council of its kind, the group must adopt a set of bylaws and elect its first executive.
The members and executives for seven standing committees – Women, Aboriginal and Racialized Workers, Young Workers, LGBT, Workers with Disability, Health Safety and Environment, Political Action – will also be elected.
“We have a lot of bread-and-butter business to cover,” Fortier said. “
There will be an address from National President Jerry Dias on the opening day, as well as presentations from research director Bill Murnighan on union rights and from economist Jim Stanford on the Good Jobs Summit that Unifor is planning.
Symone Walters, whose son Tahj Loor-Walters was killed last summer, will speak about her work with Unifor Local 112 in Toronto to end gun violence. Her father, Victor Loor, is a member of 112.
Barbara MacQuarrie, community director of the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children at the University of Western Ontario, will also be a guest speaker.
Other regional Unifor councils are also planned over the coming months across the country.
