WINNIPEG — Unifor welcomes the official opening of a new bus manufacturing facility in Winnipeg by NFI Group and its subsidiary New Flyer, marking an important step forward for Canadian manufacturing and the creation of good union jobs.

“This investment means more union jobs in Winnipeg and more Canadian-made buses on our roads,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “When we build here at home, we strengthen our communities, support families with good wages and benefits, and ensure Canada can build and maintain the transit vehicles commuters rely on.”

The new facility enables full Canadian bus production in Winnipeg for the first time in 15 years. The expansion is expected to increase production capacity and create hundreds of skilled manufacturing jobs. As one of Canada’s largest unions in the manufacturing sector, Unifor has long advocated for policies that prioritize domestic production and Canadian content in public procurement.

“Public investment should translate into Canadian jobs,” said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle. “This facility shows what’s possible when governments and employers back domestic industry. A strong Canadian manufacturing base is essential to a resilient and secure supply chain.”

The expansion also supports the production of zero-emission transit vehicles, helping transit agencies modernize fleets while keeping production in Canada. Winnipeg has long been a hub for heavy-duty vehicle manufacturing, and today’s announcement reinforces Manitoba’s role in building the next generation of transit vehicles.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
