FORT MCMURRAY, AB, Sept. 12, 2016 /CNW/ - Workers at the Suncor East Tank Farm voted overwhelmingly to join Unifor—Canada's energy union. The workers will join 4,000 members as part of local 707A at the company's extraction facilities in Northern Alberta.

"We look forward to getting to work at the bargaining table," said Joie Warnock, Unifor's Western Director. "Joining Unifor is an important step forward in the fight for fairness for oil and gas workers in Alberta and across the country."

"I congratulate our new members on taking a bold step to strengthen their workplace rights," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. "Many workers in the oil and gas sector are still without the protections and safety of a collective agreement. Unifor will continue our efforts to engage and listen to energy workers."

Unifor is Canada's energy union, representing over 12,000 members including offshore platforms in Newfoundland and Labrador, Suncor in Alberta's Oilsands, energy crown corporations in Saskatchewan, and refineries in several provinces. Unifor was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
