Edmonton—Bill 17 is a balanced approach to modernizing Alberta’s antiquated labour code, says Canada’s largest union in the private sector.
“A system of strong workers’ rights is good for the economy,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Regional Director.
Bill 17, the Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act, represents the first modernization of Alberta’s labour code and employment standards in 30 years. It gives greater powers to officials who are enforcing employment standards and strengthens options for joining a union. Unifor says that’s good news for workers and a wise choice to address current loopholes that place workers in vulnerable work situations.
“Giving employers all the power has stacked the deck against workers who want better working conditions and fair wages,” said Warnock. “By re-balancing the power dynamic in the workplace, the government is giving Albertans important tools to have greater leverage at work.”
The Bill also strengthens leave provisions for Albertans who are sick, caring for a family member, or fleeing domestic violence.
“Bill 17 proposes to greater protect Albertans with family responsibilities or those dealing with a traumatic life event,” said Warnock.
