OTTAWA – Unifor National President Jerry Dias will be in the Centre Block of Parliament as the federal budget is released on Wednesday, and available to do media interviews on what the budget means for working Canadians.

“Working people in Canada need a budget that addresses the real needs they face and creates opportunities for them, their families and their communities to prosper,” Dias said. “Canadians need to know that their government is working to improve their lives.”

WHAT: Unifor National President Jerry Dias available to comment on the 2017 federal budget

WHEN: Wednesday, March 22, after 4p.m.

WHERE: Centre Block, Room 253-D, the Railway Room

Unifor is calling for several measures to help working Canadians, including expanding the country’s manufacturing base and investments in infrastructure as sources of good jobs, affordable child care, transition programs for workers affected by the shift to a greener economy, expanded Employment insurance including skills upgrading and other measures, tax measures to help the Canadian media sector through the current period of transition, a commitment to keep airports and other assets in public hands, and other measures. Unifor’s complete pre-budget submission is available at unifor.org.

Dias said Unifor will also be taking a close look at the promised gender-based analysis of the budget to evaluate how the government’s proposed measures affect women and contributes to the equity that Canadians want.

“Gender inequity will not be addressed in a meaningful way until government policies and programs are subjected to a rigorous gender-based analysis and actions are taken to address any shortfalls,” Dias said.
