TORONTO—Unifor Local 1090 members at Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort will go on strike at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 31, if a new collective agreement is not reached with Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (GCGC) before the deadline.
Unifor's bargaining committee remains at the table this week, working to secure a deal that addresses wages and working conditions for more than 900 gaming workers. If no agreement is reached, picket lines will go up at both casinos starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday.
Unifor members at the casinos include coin workers, cashiers, slot technicians and attendants, table games technicians, and dealers, along with gaming hosts and player service representatives. The potential strike action would also include hospitality and food service staff such as servers, cooks, dishwashers, bus persons, and chefs, as well as room attendants and housekeepers at the Pickering site hotel. Rounding out the bargaining unit are bus drivers, coat check attendants, and shipping and receiving personnel.
The possible strike at Ajax and Pickering comes just over a week after Unifor Local 1090 security officers were locked out at Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, formerly Casino Woodbine, on July 23. That labour dispute remains unresolved and Unifor remains prepared to negotiate a fair deal for workers.
