ST. JOHN’S–Striking Dominion workers will hold a picket line food drive to help local charities provide Thanksgiving meals to families in need.
“These workers want to make sure that no one goes hungry on Thanksgiving,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “Unifor Dominion members will be accepting donations that would normally be made in store at all picket line locations to be distributed to food insecure families across the province.”
On Wednesday October 7, the World Day for Decent Work, members of the public are invited to bring non-perishable items to any of the 11 Dominion picket sites in the province between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The Thanksgiving food drive follows last month’s donation of $10,000 to Newfoundland food banks by the Unifor Social Justice Fund.
The 1,400 Dominion workers, on strike for more than six weeks, continue to call on Dominion parent company Loblaw Companies Limited to pay a living wage and to provide full-time jobs.
“Our members know the cost of groceries better than most. They understand that there are people in their community who struggle to afford food to feed their families, in fact some of the Dominion workers rely on food banks themselves because they simply don’t earn enough to buy the groceries that they sell,” said Carolyn Wrice, President of Unifor Local 597.
