HALIFAX, Sept. 14, 2016 /CNW/ - Representatives from Unifor long-term care workplaces from across the province are gathering in Halifax on Thursday to demand the Nova Scotia government reverse funding cuts to long-term care.
"What we were promised by the Liberals was that they would be the government to improve health care delivery in the province, and what we've seen instead is opportunistic budget cuts to balance their books on the backs of our senior citizens and care providers," said Lana Payne, Unifor Atlantic Regional Director.
Unifor will be launching a campaign directed at creating awareness about the cuts and pressuring the provincial government to reverse the funding cuts to live up to their election promise of delivering better health care. Budgets for long-term care have been slashed by up to 3 per cent by the provincial Liberals over the last two years and facilities are resorting to layoffs impacting resident care and a decrease in the quantity and quality of services offered.

Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers, including 26,000 health care workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
