Canadian Council is coming to Halifax this August and delegates will gather to discuss, debate and vote on resolutions that will set the political direction for the union. If your local union has something to say or wants to raise an issue, all you need to do is submit a resolution before the deadline.

Every local can submit a resolution; it only takes three simple steps. All you need to do is have a resolution approved at a membership meeting, signed by a local union officer and submitted by July 17 by email to @email or faxed to 416-495-3787.

Here are some quick tips for locals to submit a resolution to Canadian Council:

  • Resolutions must be submitted by Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
  • Each resolution must be approved by the members of the submitting local at a membership meeting. The resolution must include the date of the meeting when it was approved by the local members and it must be signed by a local union officer.
  • Resolutions should be sent on the official letterhead of the local.
  • Resolutions should typed whenever possible or emailed in Word format rather than a PDF.
  • Have the official seal or stamp of your local, if you have one.
  • Resolutions submitted by either fax or email will be accepted as long as the deadline date is respected and each resolution bears the required signatures of a local union officer.
  • Please submit your resolutions only once. It is not necessary to mail in your submission if the resolution has already been faxed or emailed with the required signatures.

To ensure that all resolutions are submitted in a format that is clear and concise for all delegates and members to understand, please keep the following guidelines in mind.

Resolutions should:

  • Be no longer than 200 words.
  • Explain why your local is submitting the motion for discussion and vote at Council.
  • Explain what your local wants done or wants to see happen; for example, indicate what you want to change, how you want it to be done, who you want to do it, and when you want it to happen.
  • Cover new issues or change current policies.
  • Cover only one main issue per resolution.
  • Use sentences that are clear, direct and short.
  • Use words that every delegate and member will easily understand - avoid jargon and acronyms.
  • Be specific.
  • Not attempt to change the constitution because Canadian Council is different than the tri-annual convention and changes or amendments to the constitution are not dealt with by the Council.
