In her report to the members at Unifor’s 4th Constitutional Convention, Atlantic Regional Director Linda MacNeil spoke about the life-saving work of members across the region and key victories including a much-needed and well-overdue pay raise for Nova Scotia’s Continuing Care Assistants (CCAs).

“Unifor advocated for years for a pay increase for CCAs knowing that recruiting and retaining workers in this classification was very difficult,” said MacNeil to the more than 1,800 members, voting delegates, observers and guests. “Unifor members fought for this, and won. This is only the beginning. There are many other members of the health care teams across acute and long-term care who likewise deserve better pay.”

MacNeil highlighted worker struggles, including the 12-week-long strike by Dominion grocery store workers in 2020 and the innovative ways Unifor supported these members.

“This strike challenged our union, as we would normally send members and leaders to support the picket line,” said MacNeil. “But with travel restrictions and concerns about our members’ health, we had to re-invent the wheel, hosting rallies from multiple cities at once via Zoom.”

MacNeil congratulated Local 2121 for their fight to secure the future of the Terra Nova vessel in the offshore sector for the next decade, told of the heroic actions of Unifor members who saved lives of passengers and crew after the ferry between Nova Scotia and PEI caught fire.
