Ministers,
We are writing to express our support for the measures announced yesterday by Prime Minister Carney regarding Canada’s critical steel and forestry industries.
In particular, we are grateful that the federal government will be convening a Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force.
As you know, Unifor is Canada’s largest private sector union, with more than 320,000 members across the country, working in every major sector of the Canadian economy. Unifor is also Canada’s forestry union, with 24,000 members spread across 10 Canadian provinces. Unifor’s members work in a variety of forestry, logging and firefighting occupations as well as wood product, bioenergy and pulp and paper manufacturing facilities.
Our union, it’s rank-and-file membership, and elected leaders from the forestry sector have been advocating and organizing tirelessly to forge a new, sustainable future for Canada’s forestry industry, its workers, and forestry-dependent communities across the country. Forestry workers and their unions continue to play a critical role in the transformation of the forestry sector, and it is vital that worker voices remain central in his ongoing process.
We respectfully ask that Unifor be invited to join and participate in the Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force. We remain committed to working with industry, community, and Indigenous stakeholders to transform the forestry sector into a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient industry for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Lana Payne Daniel Cloutier
National President, Unifor Québec Director
