Dear Minister Legacy:
I once again want to thank you and your government for the work that is being done to support our members at the Nackawic Mill. I remain confident that together we will find a solution for this workplace, our members and the community.
I am writing to follow up on our previous conversation about Unifor’s concerns regarding the recent Energy and Utilities Board decision changing the NB Power's electricity stacking rules and the significant consequences these changes are having on New Brunswick's forestry and industrial sectors. As Unifor Atlantic Regional Director, I represent thousands of working people across Atlantic Canada, including workers and families whose livelihoods depend on a strong, sustainable, and competitive industrial and forestry sector in New Brunswick.
And let me be clear, we are deeply concerned that this decision will put existing workplaces, good paying jobs and entire communities at risk. In other words, the EUB decision is a job killer.
We cannot hide the fact that when industrial operations become uncompetitive, companies make difficult decisions about production, investment, and ultimately whether they can continue operating in New Brunswick. The result can be reduced production, layoffs, permanent closures, and the loss of economic opportunities that may never return.
Unifor has been meeting with all levels of government fighting for an Industrial Strategy. Part of having an industrial strategy for the forestry sector in New Brunswick must include a sustainable energy policy.
Unifor is prepared to work with your government, employers, and other stakeholders to find a solution. However, we must recognize a focus on urgency, leadership, and a clear recognition of what is at stake here.
Behind every single workplace are workers, families, mortgages, children, and communities that depend on these jobs. Many of which are rural communities that have been built around these industrial workplaces. We are running out of time. We cannot afford to wait on these decisions. The livelihoods of thousands of New Brunswick workers and their families may depend on the decisions made in the coming weeks.
Minister, we need to get this right. I am requesting an opportunity to meet with you to discuss these concerns and identify immediate steps toward a resolution.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Murray
Unifor Atlantic Regional Director
