Vancouver—Energy workers in British Columbia are celebrating the news that the BC government will oppose Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion (TMX), says Canada’s energy union, Unifor. Opposition in BC to the pipeline is nearing a consensus, according to the union.
“The BC government’s opposition is welcome news for energy workers whose livelihood was threatened by the expansion of a pipeline designed purely for export,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor’s Western Director. “Our members who earn their living fishing on this coast also welcome the BC government’s opposition.”
Unifor has vigourously opposed the TMX for years, and is due to make it’s final submission to the National Energy Board (NEB) on January 12.
“There is truly no shortage of reasons to reject this pipeline proposal. We stand with First Nations and environmental organizations who have made compelling cases against the pipeline,” said Warnock. “The last federal election was clear evidence that Canada must turn a corner on energy policy, and it can start by squashing pipelines that don’t guarantee good jobs for Canadians.”
