Waterloo—The transit authority’s refusal to augment training and take working conditions seriously will result in service disruption in the Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge area.
“When workers vote to strike over working conditions, you know that the situation is toxic,” said Tim Mitchell, Unifor National Representative. “It’s a very serious issue that can’t be resolved until GRT takes our members concerns seriously.”
In order to give ample notice to the public, Unifor drivers will begin their legal strike action at 5 a.m. on Monday, April 3.
“Drivers take pride in servicing the Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge area. We hope to be back in a safe and respectful workplace as soon as possible,” said Mitchell.
The union emphasized that workplace health and safety combined with heavy-handed management tactics, not necessarily monetary differences, drove the members to reject the company’s offer. Local 4304 represents 644 transit operators, service attendants, and skilled trades workers at Grand River Transit.
