Unifor would like to thank outgoing British Columbia Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair for his years of service to the working people of BC.
Jim provided vocal leadership during difficult years under the BC Liberal government, which regularly undermined the basic workplace rights of British Columbians. When former Premier Gordon Campbell illegally tore up public sector contracts in 2002, Jim led a unified and grassroots fight-back that inspired a generation of activists.
More recently, Jim led the BC Federation of Labour’s successful campaign to increase the minimum wage in BC. He was also instrumental in exposing the widespread region’s use of Temporary Foreign Workers and campaigned extensively to strengthen the rights of farm workers in BC.
Jim embodied the kind of labour movement to which Unifor is proud to contribute: activist, principled, and ambitious. Unifor is excited to work within the BC labour movement, and activists across the country, in our shared goals to defeat Stephen Harper and the Conservatives and re-build a country in which workers’ rights are respected and in which we can all thrive.
At a time of significant attacks on workers’ rights, the rise of precarious work and the need for bold and strategic economic and social policy, a strong and unified labour movement is essential.
Unifor wishes Jim Sinclair the very best in his future endeavours.
