Today, May 1, 2019 Unifor joins nations around the world to mark International Workers’ Day or May Day. We express our solidarity with our sisters and brothers across the globe who are protesting and demanding better working conditions for everyone. We are all fighting the same battle and when we unite in that fight, it only strengthens our message.
This year in particular, Unifor is engaged in several major fightback campaigns. We refuse to stand idly by while companies rake in profits on the backs of workers whose rights and jobs are under constant threat.
“We will continue to call out companies who will abandon loyal employees and deny them good-paying jobs, by moving work to other countries,” said Unifor National President, Jerry Dias. “We also continue to challenge governments who seek to implement programs that cut public services, especially to society’s most vulnerable members,” said Dias.
International Workers’ Day is also a time to reflect on equality and injustice. Unifor is a union for everyone. No worker should be left behind. “No matter where we live, where we work or whether or not we have immigration status, we are all workers,” said Christine Maclin Director of Human Rights at Unifor. “We deserve decent work, universal services, and permanent status. We need gender and racial justice and global solidarity now.”
