International Human Rights Day Statement

It’s 2020. Seventy-two years after the United Nations General assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We should be celebrating all the accomplishments in Human Rights. Instead we see global resistance as governments, organizations and alt-right groups define themselves by attacking people, attacking basic human rights because they see themselves as superior to others who are different.

This December 10th, Unifor asks people to unite and see past our differences and to celebrate those differences. See the whole person you don’t know, take time to get educated in the diversity of the human race. We must collectively stand up to governments that use divisive politics.

We must see that capitalism is working against all people, it uses our beautiful differences to divide us, yet we are more alike than we are different. Our collective power is what will make real lasting change because we are all in this together injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere.

In the last few months we have seen the world unite with one voice and scream that equity matters.   Human Rights are about ensuring no person is left out, that justice is fair. There is no accepting, tolerating or justifying violence and people are afforded respect and dignity in any place. Human Rights ensures all lives are valued, appreciated and celebrated.

Unifor has made real strides with our equity programs and we will continue to make the necessary changes for workplaces, communities, Canada and globally to achieve true equality, equity and justice for all people.
