Across the country, Unifor local unions will be recognizing March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racism with special events and community actions.
The union released its statement on March 21, along with a series of three workplace posters, meant to draw attention to the enduring problem of racism and why it is a trade union issue.
Vinay Sharma, Unifor Human Rights Director said that the union’s work on racial justice and anti-racism is shaped by a working class analysis of the root causes of racism; including colonialism, imperialism and the historical exploitation of people of colour throughout the world.
“We know that racism undermines our collective struggle for equality, inclusiveness and social justice. This is why Unifor is committing to combatting racism in our workplaces wherever it exists and in our communities – together, we must eliminate this barrier to equality,” said Sharma.
The statement reads:
“Unifor is committed to work with all of our members and locals to eliminate racism from our workplaces and communities. This statement is a reminder of the need to heighten awareness of the harmful effects of racism on a national scale and to clearly demonstrate the commitment and leadership of the union in fostering racial justice, respect, equality and diversity.”
