Hazardous exposure sessions for former GE workers

Unifor is assisting GE-Canada workers and retirees in Peterborough, Ontario who contracted occupational disease, believed caused by exposure to hazardous materials at the plant. There are currently 31 Unifor members with WSIB claims for job-related illness, including several forms of cancer.

“Unifor has worked diligently to collect records and scientific data to help support WSIB occupational disease claims at GE-Canada,” said Unifor Director of Health, Safety and Environment Sari Sairanen. “Additionally, Unifor believes that new workplace exposure information will lead to successful appeals of previously denied claims.”

Unifor has joined the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), Office of the Worker Adviser (OWA) and Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers Inc. (OHCOW) at information sessions on the claims process.  The drop-in sessions take place March 28-30 at the Peterborough Naval Association; scheduled appointment times can be booked in advance.

“Unifor is reaching out to current and former members who have or are considering an occupational disease claim and to those who received prior rejections,” said Unifor National Representative Joel Carr. “The union is here to support them through what can be a difficult process, especially for those who are battling illness at the same time.”
